As you well know, Haiti has suffered a catastrophic natural disaster that destroyed practically the entire country and disrupted until today the means of life of the Haitian people. The losses in human lives, infrastructures, commerce, educational services, and living conditions are insurmountable. This unforeseen event took everybody by surprise and unprepared living the entire country and its population in a stage of desperation and a never ending suffering. The international community has named this tragedy one of the worse catastrophes in history. Lately, the country has known a cholera epidemic that represents a deadly threat and has already taken more than 2,700 lives and infected more than 130,000 people and damaged farms, infrastructure, contaminating 78, 000 hectares of crops.
We, Haitians in the Diaspora cannot remain indifferent and watch from outside the suffering of our brothers and sisters and the destruction of the country. For these reasons, Haitians living in the United States of America have decided to create this Foundation to help in the reconstruction and human development of Haitian people. We believe that that the task of putting back Haiti in good shape needs the participation of all us and not only with the help of the international community. Government only efforts are not enough; the religious and civil society’s participations are indispensable. That is why we are in the process of creating this entity and making all the efforts necessary for its constitution and operations. At this point, we are in the preliminary steps. On the one hands, we are making all the activities related to the institutional structure to organize our participation. And on the other hands, we have identified five priority areas to be concentrated at in the attention of the most needed by this new foundation. We have set up strategies and objectives for the short, medium, and long-term.
We have identified priority areas which are the followings: education, health, housing, a new technology institute, environment, and small business. In each priority area specific projects are going to execute and implement in connection with the national and international organization including the Haitian government.
We recognize that it is a difficult task with so many challenges that need to be tackled, however we believe that with faith, perseverance, patience, solidarity, with the good heart, and the love of the international community, individuals, and organizations committed to help our beloved Haiti will make it possible. The Three Hands Foundation needs the support of all Haitian citizens, the International community, donors, volunteers, and organizations so that Haiti can have a better chance to recover and prosper. |
